Transition words in Arabic
1. Conjunctions: they are used to join words or sentences together:
And My brother and I study together. | و أنا وأخي نَدْرُسُ مَعًا. |
So \ and I was late, so I took a taxi. | ف كُنْتُ مُتَأَخِّرًا، فركبْتُ تاكْسي. |
Then I woke up at 6, then I brushed my teeth. | ثُ مَّاِسْتَيْقَظْتُ في الساعة السَّادِسَة، ثُمَّ نَظَّفْتُ أسْناني. |
Or I’m not sure where your book is, it’s on the table or on the couch. | أَو لَسْتُ مُتأكّدة أين كتابُك، هو على الطَّاولة أوعلى الأريكة. |
Or (questions) Are you a student or a teacher? | أَم هَل أنتِ طالِبة أَم أُستاذة؟ |
2. Retractation words:
But I want to learn a new language, but unfortunately I don’t have time. | لَكِن أُريد أن أتَعَلَّمَ لُغة جديدة، لكِن للأسف لَيْس عِندي وقت. |
But (comes after negation) This man isn’t Mohammad, but Samir. | بَل هَذا الرَّجُل ليس مُحمد، بَل سَمير. |
However I live in Cairo, however, my family lives in Port Said. | أَمَّا…ف… أسْكُن في القاهرة، أما عائلتي فتسكن في مدينة بورسعيد. |
However \ nevertheless I was intending to go to the library today, however, I’m tired, so I will stay home. | إلَّا أنّ \ غَير أنَّ: كنت أنوي الذهاب إلى المكتبة اليوم، إلا أنّني متعبة فسأبقى في البيت. |
On the other hand I think that learning languages is very fun, on the other hand, it needs a lot of time and work. | من ناحية أخرى \ على الجانب الآخَر أعتقد أنَّ تعلُّم اللغات ممتع جدًّا، ومن ناحية أُخرى، يحتاج إلى الكثير من الوقت والدراسة. |
3. Words that indicate reason:
Because My friend is sad because he didn’t pass the exam. | لأنَّ صديقي حزين لأنَّهُ لَم يَنْجَحْ في الامتحان. |
Because of I won’t go out today because of the rain outside. | بِسَبَب لَنْ أخْرُجَ اليوم بِسبب المَطَر بالخارج. |
To \ in order to I will go to the library to study a little bit. | لِ سأذهبُ إلى المَكتبة لأدرس قليلًا. |
In order to I need to study well in order to succeed in school. | كَي \ لِكَي أحتاج أن أدرس جيدًا كي أنجح في المدرسة. |
As I won’t go to work today as the doctor told me that I need to rest. | حَيْثُ لن أذهب إلى العمل اليوم حيثُ قال لي الطبيب أنَّني أحتاج إلى الراحة. |
Since (reason) I will visit my friend since i’m near her house now. | بِما أنَّ سأزور صديقتي بِما أنَّني قريبة من بيتها الآن. |
Therefore I didn’t sleep well, therefore, i can’t concentrate. | لِذَلِك ما نمتُ جيدًا، لذلك لا أستطيع التركيز. |
Based on that I have found a suitable job in the capital, and based on that, I’m looking for accommodation there. | بُناءً على ذلك لقد وجدتُ فرصة عمل مُناسبة في العاصمة، و بناءً على ذلك، أبحثُ عن سكن لي هناك. |
4. Words that mean addition:
Too \ also I practice football and swimming too. | أيضًا أُمارِسُ رياضَة كُرة القدم والسباحة أيضًا. |
Too \ also \ as well We have visited many Arab countries, and some European countries as well. | كَذَلِك لقد زُرْنا العديد من البِلاد العربية، وكذلك بعض البلاد الأوروبية. |
Also \ adequately I should finish my homework today, I also should meet some friends in the evening. | كَمَا يجب أن أُنهي واجباتي اليوم، كما يجب أن أقابل بعض الأصدقاء في المساء. |
In addition to In addition to English, I speak french. | بالإضافة إلى بالإضافة إلى اللغة الإنجليزية، أتحدث الفرنسية. |
Besides Besides the monumental places, Cairo is also known for many modern and developed places. | إلى جانِب إلى جانب الأماكن الأثرية، تشتهر القاهرة بالعديد من الأماكن الحديثة والمتطورة. |
5. Words related to time:
When Everyday, when I wake up, I drink coffee. | لَمَّا كل يوم، لمَّا أصحو، أشرب القهوة. |
When Call me when you arrive in my city so we will meet. | عِنْدما اِتَّصِل بي عِندما تصل إلى مدينتي كَي نتقابل. |
While The phone rang while I was asleep. | بَيْنَما دَقَّ الهاتف بينما كنت نائِمًا. |
During I like to listen to music during the night. | أثْناء أحبُّ أن أستمع إلى الموسيقى أثناء الليل. |
6. Words of explanation \ rephrasing:
I mean I mean that traveling to new countries is very useful. | أعْني \ أقْصِد أعني بِكلامي أنَّ السفر إلى بلاد جديدة مفيد جدًّا. |
AKA (also known as) Yesterday I rode a horse. | أَي أمس ركبتُ جوادًا أي حِصانًا. |
